When I had my stroke and almost died, I was 54 years old.
I’m a middle-school math teacher, single mother of two children, and a crazy in love grandma of one grandson named Jake.
One thing I like to do is bake – and that’s what I was doing when I almost died …
It was Tuesday evening around 8 pm. I was in my kitchen baking chocolate chip cookies for my grandson Jake who I would be visiting the next day.
As I was mixing the cookie batter, I started to feel light-headed and dizzy …

The doctor continued, “you must control your blood sugar, or you could suffer another stroke, or a heart attack, or need to get your leg amputated.”
“You got very lucky that you didn’t die. You dodged a bullet, but next time you might not be so lucky and get a second chance.”
He said he wanted to put me on a prescription medication to lower my blood sugar.
Well, I was terribly afraid of having another stroke or other terrible event, so I started taking the drug Metformin …
… and it worked for the first week or ten days …
… but then I started having extreme tiredness. weakness. nausea. vomiting and trouble breathing.
When I told the doctor this, guess what he wanted to do?

I caught myself thinking this is the wrong attitude to have. For the sake of my own health, and being around for my children and grandchild, I must do this and get my blood sugar down, so I stay alive.
With the help of my best friend Rebecca, I made a plan for eating and exercise.
I was stoked – I was going to follow it and kick this blood sugar problem.
And I did … for about three weeks. I followed the diet. I did the exercise. I was doing really good and my blood sugar was dropping a little bit.
But then real life set in like it always does ….
Here’s what happened …
I was power walking in my neighborhood… yapping on my cell phone …
